DIY Body Scrub

by Cath

Today I bring you something super simple to make: sugar scrubs!

I’ve been making my own sugar body scrub for years and it just takes five minutes. Another plus: it’s inexpensive compared to the sugar scrubs bought in a regular store and it just uses household ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. No need to buy something expensive to treat your skin a deserved exfoliation.

Sugar is great product to keep your skin hydrated, since it’s a natural humectant. It’s also very gentle as a exfoliator, it can be used even on your face. My recipe uses white sugar however if you do find it too harsh you can substitute for brown sugar.

Why should I exfoliate?

I’m not very good at pampering myself, I’d rather be here writing this blog post than moisturizing my skin or putting a mask. However, exfoliating is important to get rid of dead skin cells and it discourages ingrown hairs which is something that I suffer quite often. When I use this sugar scrub, especially after epilation, I’ve noticed that I don’t have so many ingrown hairs.

It doesn’t take too much time to scrub the sugar on my skin in a circular motion while I’m taking a bath. I do it once a week as my skin is a little bit sensitive and I don’t want to over exfoliate it, it also suits my lazy self.

Also great as a gift!

This diy body scrub also makes a great gift, it’s simple to whip up, a very good last-minute gift, when you only now realized that you’ve forgotten to buy a present. DIY gifts are more thoughtful, you can take the time to personalize it according to the receiver’s taste and it’s just an amazing feel to see a person thankful for a present that you made.

Here’s the recipe for these simple sugar scrubs.

Ingredients

1 cup of white sugar
1/4 cup of honey
1/4 cup of olive oil

Method

Mix everything and done! I don’t think you can go wrong with this simple diy sugar scrub, it’s just that simple! It’ll keep for approximately 30 days in an airtight container. Don’t let water come into the scrub mixture as it’ll start attracting bacteria.

Feel free to double or triple the recipe, I just like to make small batches. You can also replace the honey and use only olive oil, I find that the honey makes it more moisturizing.

You can also substitute the olive oil and use coconut oil or other more expensive oils, I have always used olive oil with success and it’s always in my cupboard, no need to run to the store to make a new batch.

Scented sugar scrubs

Are you looking to fancy up this recipe? Perhaps personalize it according to your favorite scents or the recipient of this sugar scrub?

Add about 15 drops of essential oil for each batch of this recipe, you can use lavender to add a calming effect or frankincense to make a woody scent. Have fun and experiment, just be careful to use essential oils that are safe for your skin.

Need something more heavy duty?

For your feet, trade the sugar for salt, usually something harsher is needed, specially in the summer when your feet suffer a little bit more. Your feet will thank you afterward.
